Bakuchiol vs. Collagen: What's the Difference?

Rather than saying Bakuchiol is universally “better than collagen,” I'd say it offers a different—and very direct—approach to skincare.

Bakuchiol is applied directly to your skin, where clinical research has demonstrated improvements in visible wrinkles and pigmentation. Laboratory research has also found that bakuchiol can influence retinol-like pathways and expression of several collagen types, although those mechanistic findings shouldn't be presented as proof that your particular serum “rebuilds collagen.” 

Oral collagen works differently. Research on collagen supplements is mixed. Some meta-analyses report improvements in hydration, elasticity, and wrinkles, while a 2025 analysis found that benefits disappeared in higher-quality or non-industry-funded subsets and concluded that the evidence did not support collagen supplements for preventing or treating skin aging.
